Best Pinterest Marketing Strategies For 2020

Video Pins

Create video pins!

I don’t need to tell you how popular videos are, from Youtube to Instagram, to Pinterest. They are everywhere.

And they are only getting bigger!

So if you still haven’t tried out creating video pins, 2020 is the perfect time to do it.

You can film a video or create one with video editing apps like Inshot or even Canva.

But you need to be careful with your video pins and make sure you don’t give everything away in your video.

Pinterest isn’t Instagram or Youtube where your goal is for people to watch your video till the end and subscribe.

You want people to click through to your website.

If you give them everything in the video they won’t have a reason to click through.

That’s why you need to use video pins to draw people’s attention and make them want to click and find out more.

Pinterest Visual Search

Pinterest is very smart and uses so many different things to figure out what a pin is about. There’s keywords, visual search, hashtags and so much more!

That’s why the actual photo you use is SO important.

If you use a photo of a baby but add keywords and hashtags related to pancakes recipe, Pinterest is smart and will know that a baby is on that photo.

And then be confused as to where to place your pin, what your pin is actually about.

That’s why it’s so important that every part of your pin matches what your post is about.

If you want to promote a pancake recipe choose a photo of pancakes and add relevant keywords and hashtags.

Yes, that might sound obvious and you are probably already doing it but for some topics, it’s not as simple.

Especially if your niche is a lifestyle one.

You might be tempted to use this really cool picture you found but if it’s not related to what your post is about don’t use it.

No matter how pretty it is.

Use Hashtags

I already talked about the importance of hashtags in my 5 tips to increase your Pinterest traffic post but I need to mention them again.

Hashtags are a very big part of Pinterest marketing for 2020.

They are another tool for Pinterest to determinate what your pin is about so the algorithm can understand your pin better.

Hashtags are also very helpful for Pinterest users who can search for hashtags.

How to use hashtags on Pinterest:

  • use 2-5 relevant hashtags
  • don’t use too broad hashtags, instead, find some specific ones
  • don’t use too many hashtags and be spammy (you don’t want to end up in Pinterest jail! )

Keywords

Now let’s talk about keywords.

We all know by now that keywords are very important and that you need to use them on your profile and your pins but the way you use them is incredibly important.

Keyword stuffing is a big NO!

Pinterest doesn’t like that.

For your pin description, pick a few keywords that best describe your pin and write 1-3 sentences around them.

Remember, you’re writing your pin description for users, not Pinterest.

Think of writing your pin description as if you are texting a friend and telling them what your post is about.

Here is an example of one of my pin descriptions.

I like to start my description with a question as that’s a great way to grab people’s attention AND include a keyword right at the beginning.

So if you’re struggling with writing your pin descriptions and don’t know how to start, try asking a question.

Create Fresh Pins Often

This tip is one of the most important ones for Pinterest marketing for 2020.

Creating fresh pins often is incredibly important!

Pinterest loves fresh pins and favourites them.

Spending time pinning and scheduling a pin to your boards and all your group boards and adding it to Tailwind’s SmartLoop is actually a waste of time.

What you should do instead is regularly create fresh pins for your posts and schedule them to your best performing boards and then let it be.

Bonus tip-for your best performing posts create fresh pins weekly to keep the traffic coming!

Clean Up Your Pinterest Boards

Go through your Pinterest boards and see which ones perform great and which ones don’t bring any value.

You can check how your boards are performing by going to your Tailwind dashboard > Insights > Board Insights and there you can see analytics for all of your boards. How many repins you got, how many new followers, engagement score etc.

You can also click on each board to see all the pins you’ve added to that board and see how many repins each pin got.

Based on that data archive all your low performing boards, both personal and group ones.

Also, if there are any boards you haven’t pinned to in a long time or that don’t fit your niche anymore, archive those as well.

Now that you’ve gotten rid of those boards go and create some new boards.

Optimize Your Pins For Mobile

Take a look at the picture below.

You can see all Pinterest users and the devices they use for Pinterest.

As you can see, the majority of Pinterest users are on mobile.

This information is incredibly important.

It means that most of the people who see your pins see them on their phones, not on desktop.

That’s why it’s so important that your pins look good on mobile.

You need to make sure your font size is big enough, that the important words stand out.

If you use Canva to make your Pinterest graphics you can download their app and check how your graphic looks on your phone while you’re editing it.

I always have my phone next to me while creating pins and go back and forth to make sure it looks good on my phone.

Try New Things

And lastly, try out new things!

Like I said at the beginning, Pinterest is constantly adding new features and making changes to its algorithm.

You need to try new things and make changes to your Pinterest strategy, otherwise, you won’t be able to keep up and your traffic will go down.
